Confocal Microscopy Products, Technologies, and Patents

Lucid has shipped and installed well over 150 U.S. FDA-cleared VivaScope® confocal imagers worldwide. These devices are in routine use by doctors for clinical studies, medical research and patient care. The Company's innovative products have been developed based on its broad foundation of in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy technology.

Several blinded pilot studies using Lucid's VivaScope® confocal imagers have been published in peer reviewed medical journals by researchers in Europe and North America. These studies have demonstrated the potential sensitivity and specificity of the technique for assessment of numerous skin conditions, including skin cancers. As a result of these studies, Lucid's confocal imagers are entering routine clinical use in Europe and Australia.

Under a 3-year grant from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, Lucid is conducting a five-site clinical study to validate results of several European studies of the diagnostic accuracy of VivaScope® 1500 images for pigmented lesions. In addition, Lucid is sponsoring a separate community-based trial to demonstrate the efficacy of the procedure when incorporated into the routine clinical workflow of private U.S. based dermatology practices.

Lucid’s patent portfolio consists of more than 40 issued patents in the U.S., Australia and China. Approximately 40 additional U.S. and foreign patents are pending. This patent portfolio broadly covers the Company’s VivaScope® confocal imagers and its VivaNet® digital telemedicine services business. The Company's apparatus patents broadly cover devices fundamental to the practical clinical use of confocal microscopy in dermatology and several other medical disciplines.
