What is VivaScopy? - Imaging the Skin

Because the skin is readily available and can be seen clinically (with the naked eye), technological advancements in imaging haven’t been as forthcoming as in other disciplines. In recent years, however, imaging the skin has been an important area of research for many teams around the world. Lucid has worked with some of the brightest minds in electro-optical imaging in its development process – and we continue to work with those teams today to refine our clinical products.
One of the most challenging aspects of imaging the skin has been how to get beneath the outer-most surface of the skin. Many other technologies can give excellent views of the surface of the skin; and some technologies exist that can see deep into the skin – but each of these technologies has a trade-off: either deep or detailed. None of these other technologies has been able to bridge the gap between imaging the skin at multiple depths and providing cellular-resolution views of the skin.
Using confocal technology, Lucid has perfected a way to use laser light to “peer” beneath the surface of the skin, giving medical professionals unparalleled, high-resolution, and cellular-detail images of the skin in its native state. Medical professionals are now able to visualize the skin in its natural environment, without the time delay or the changes and artifacts which typically result from traditional tissue processing techniques, and develop a diagnosis based upon images of living skin. Using images captured with Lucid’s VivaScope imagers, confocal readers have the opportunity to render a clinical judgment easier and faster than ever before.
